Checking for updates and updating Pngr

Understand automatic notifications, verified downloads, and installation requirements.

Manual checks

On macOS, choose Pngr → Check for Updates…. On Windows, choose File → Check for Updates…. The update window reports whether a newer public GitHub release is available and shows its release notes.

A failed check does not mean your installed version is current. Check internet access to GitHub and try again later. View Release opens the release page when a release is available.

Automatic notifications

Pngr checks when the application opens. Automatic attempts are limited to once per 24 hours, including failed attempts. This is a launch-time check, not a background check every 24 hours while the app stays open. A manual check bypasses the automatic-check interval.

When a newer version is found, Pngr displays an in-app notice. Open it to review the release, or dismiss it. An automatic check does not download or install an update.

Download and install

  1. Review the release notes.
  2. Click Download Update.
  3. Wait for the download and integrity verification to complete.
  4. Click Install and Restart when ready to stop monitoring.

Pngr verifies the update package against the published SHA-256 checksum. Download failure or cancellation leaves the installed application unchanged. Installation waits for normal application exit so Pngr can stop monitoring and save the workspace. Monitoring data is preserved.

Supported installations

PlatformIn-app installation requirements
macOSInstalled DMG application in /Applications/ or your user ~/Applications/ directory, with write access
WindowsInstalled using Pngr-Setup.exe; portable copies do not support in-app installation

An app running from a disk image or Downloads must be moved into Applications first. A read-only macOS installation needs a writable installation location. If the update window says automatic installation is unavailable, use View Release and install the published release package.

Distribution packages are unsigned, and macOS packages are not notarized. Gatekeeper or SmartScreen may require approval through the operating system's normal interface. Approve only a download you trust.
